Last Friday, my friends and I spent an inspiring afternoon at The Other Art Fair, held at the iconic Truman Brewery in London. As one of the UK’s most celebrated independent art events, the fair brought together over 175 emerging and established artists, offering a vibrant showcase of original and affordable art.
Immersive Art Experiences
The atmosphere was electric—part gallery, part creative playground. We wandered through installations, interactive workshops, and pop-up experiences. Some highlights included:
- Tarot as a Mirror: A participatory workshop where visitors created their own tarot cards, blending art with personal reflection.
- Nick White’s Stamp Hunt: A creative activity involving bespoke rubber stamps to make unique prints.
- Blind Date with an Artwork: A playful installation where you could buy a mystery artwork, wrapped and labeled with poetic clues.
Feline Art Discoveries & Tarot Inspiration
As a cat artist, I naturally gravitate toward any artwork featuring cats—and The Other Art Fair didn’t disappoint. I discovered several feline-inspired pieces, each with its own unique style and personality. What truly stood out, though, was a tarot deck illustrated by Danic Lago. While I’m not typically drawn to tarot readings, I’ve always been fascinated by tarot lore and symbolism. The artwork in this deck was captivating—mystical, bold, and imaginative, with a narrative quality that really resonated with me.
Purchasing this tarot deck felt serendipitous, especially since I’ve been toying with the idea of creating a tarot-inspired series of cat paintings. Seeing Danic Lago’s work in person gave me a surge of inspiration and a fresh perspective on how to merge my love for cats with the rich visual language of tarot. Watch this space—there may be a mystical cat collection in my studio’s future!
Supporting New Voices
A standout feature was the New Futures programme, which gives exhibition space to underrepresented and emerging artists. This year’s winner, Kate Hall, showcased rural landscape paintings with a supernatural twist, layering fluorescent grounds and dark skies for a truly cinematic effect.
Food, Drinks, and More
We took a break at the food stalls, enjoying hand-crafted filo pastries from Hush Hush and excellent coffee from Monkshood Coffee. The fair’s fully stocked bar was a perfect spot to relax and chat about our favourite discoveries.
What We Bought
Between us, we picked up some beautiful pieces—one friend chose a bold abstract print, while I couldn’t resist a dreamy landscape that now has pride of place at home. The fair’s curated “Under £300” collection made it easy to find affordable, original art. Of course, my personal highlight was the Danic Lago tarot deck—equal parts art object and creative inspiration.
Final Thoughts
The Other Art Fair is more than just an art market—it’s a welcoming, creative hub that celebrates diversity, playfulness, and the joy of discovery. Whether you’re an art lover, a collector, or just curious, it’s an event I’d highly recommend.
